Sentence correction questions appear in GMAT/GRE exam as well as most competitive exams that test knowledge of English language.
Sentence correction questions test understanding of grammar rules. These questions ask to recognize the mistake in a sentence and correct it.
Here are some of the grammar rules that Sentence Correction questions test :
Agreement
The Noun and Verb should agree for the sentence to be consistent. Singular noun should take singular verbs and plural noun should take plural verbs.
For example,
Incorrect : He go to the park.
Correct : He goes to the park.
Incorrect : Number of residents in our apartment community have grown.
Correct : Number of residents in our apartment community has grown.
Similarly, pronoun must agree with the noun.
For example,
Incorrect : When it rains, those pour.
Correct: When it rains, it pours.
Diction
Words should be chosen appropriately to reflect part of the speech as follows :
Pronouns : Myself shouldn’t replace I or Me.
Example :
Incorrect : Hari and myself will play Tennis today.
Correct: Hari and I will play Tennis today.
many/much : Count words like many or much should be used appropriately.
Example:
Incorrect : There wasn’t many water in the pond.
Correct : There wasn’t much water in the pond.
among/between : Between should be used when relationship is between two parties, for more than two among should be used.
Example:
Incorrect : She and I divided the cake among us.
Correct : She and I divided the cake between us.
as/like : As mostly means a capacity and is usually follows by a verb. Like is used as preposition and is usually followed by a noun, pronoun or verb ending in “ing” like biking, swimming etc.
Example:
Incorrect : He works like a teacher.
Correct : He works as a teacher.
Grammatical construction
Avoid fragments or disconnected sentences
Incorrect : We saw him at the party. And his friend.
Correct : We saw him and his friend at the party.
Run-on sentences should be separated for readability
Incorrect : Brett Lee is still a feared bowler most batsmen don’t want to face him.
Correct : Brett Lee is still a feared bowler ; most batsmen don’t want to face him.
